Program Goals

To develop and complete (or near-complete, whatever “complete” means to you…) the new project of your dreams with the support of FKT Artistic Team and your fellow cohort-mates. To make the best art you can make in a collaborative, supportive environment.

To meet like-minded theatrical peers and join a welcoming community, making new connections in the professional field as you collaborate with dramaturgs and directors on your reading.

To present your work in a public-facing, live, in-person staged reading.

To cultivate an idea of what magic means to you.

Application for Summer 2025

FKT is so very excited to be entering the fourth iteration of our Summer Residency Program in 2025!  We want to work with YOU – by YOU, we mean an artist with some writing experience who is excited about actualizing a new play idea. We want to work with artists who are committed to bringing their dream project to life and committed to actively participating in the 2025 cohort and the FKT community at large.

Residency Program applications will open in April 2025 – stay tuned!

Want to get a head start? The FKT Summer Residency Program application typically requests:

  • A bio / artist statement

    • Why is FKT the perfect home for you to workshop this project?

    • What do you find magical about the medium of theater?

  • A description of the project you hope to work on with FKT

    • Why this piece now?

    • Why are you the only person who can create this piece, how do the content/themes reflect YOU?

    • What is magical about your project?

  • A work sample and resume

Program Overview

First Kiss Theatre Company’s Summer Residency Program is the heart of our company’s season. FKT is passionate about supporting our fellow emerging and pre-emerging artists in the development of bold, experimental, joyful, accessible, magical new work, all shook up and baked in a supportive, collaborative community. The Summer Residency is a [mostly] virtual annual program that runs from June through August for emerging and pre-emerging artists to develop a new theatrical work, culminating in a series of in-person staged readings of the pieces in New York City.

Four artists are selected each summer, and the group meets once a week over Zoom from June through August. Weekly meetings include opportunities to share pages and receive feedback, as well as discussing existing plays “book club-style.” We invite guest speakers throughout the summer (i.e., fellow writers and artists, theatrical experts, marketing specialists, etc.) to speak with our residents and provide helpful insights on the world of professional theater beyond the residency.

Each summer also includes an in-person Residency Retreat, usually held in nature outside of the busy cities our cohort members might come from. The retreat is all about sharing art, generative exercises, games, meals, and space. We welcome artists from any location across the country to apply for our residency, although we do prioritize artists who are available to join us for the in-person retreat on the East Coast (we do provide travel stipends as needed).
